Trust the Mess

There are many truths I hold close to me, but this recent mantra is one that speaks the loudest. One that has grown bigger over the years and remained steady in all forms of uncertainty. These past few months (where I have clearly abandoned blogging) have been, in one word, messy. Physically, emotionally, financially, and creatively. I tend to deal with things privately, I retreat to quieter places and limit my access to people or internet or other elements that might make sorting out the mess more difficult. But in all, in the last few months, I've been quite brave. I've felt braver and more authentic than ever. And I think that for all the difficult and messy pieces there has been equal amounts of magic, friendship and love.

During this time I have tried to really think about my creative vision and the direction I want my creative life to go. I am truly thankful for the support and growth of Such Sweet Tierney over the last 4 (yes 4!!) years. I want to focus more on sharing inspiration with you, and using this blog to form a community between myself and other creators of the world. I hope to document more of my painting process as I learn and grow into my own artistic style. To trust the imperfections and the perpetual learning process and the inevitable messes.

I'll share some of my goals (26 before i turn 27 list) later this week.

Printable invitations

Hey! I'm working on several things simultaneously it seems. For the month of May I will be introducing several wedding related products including wedding stationary, button boquet stems, cupcake/drink flags and fabric garlands. Keep checking back! It's going to be a fun month!

I wanted to share some of the printable invitations I have up in the shop. I am currently working on new suites and designing custom printed invitations as well. For the bride on a budge these are an awesome way to get something professional and unique and still have some DIY capabilities.

each set comes with an Invitation, an RSVP card and either a thank you or save the date. All have double sided image files and can be customized to suit your needs. You may recognize the two bottom suites as I've posted the finished sets on the blog before! So adding handmade elements like sewn envelopes, buttons and twine were one way I mixed diy and printed.

First I wanted to wish the lovely Samantha a big Happy College Graduation! We met a couple years ago over blogging and have become fast friends! I am so proud of her and hope she finds an awesome job (Maybe closer to Seattle!).

For today's music I want to share this beautiful video of "Lost in my mind" by The Head & The Heart. It's really fantastic. Their harmonies are seriously to die for. Ok, how about I just let you listen for yourself?

Project 52 update

I'll admit I'm a little behind on reading and sharing. But I'm catching up. So don't fret. I didn't read anything in March, and losing my glasses certainly didn't help that! Here's an update on a few of the recent books I've read!

Book 5: Divisedero by Michael Ondaatje

I Kind of loathed this book. It had very mixed reviews on Amazon, sort of a love or hate situation. The writing of the book isn't necessarily poor, but the overall voice of the story and certainly the structure of the book are frustrating as hell. The story breaks in it's timeline frequently, alternating between time periods over 100 years apart. One of the characters seems completely forgotten about, as though the writer meant to come back to him in the story but sort of forgot to. In other words, don't waste your time with this book.

Book 6: The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist fight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie

I am deeply interested in the culture of American Indians. My book shelves are littered with novels and memoirs filled with their prose. And I've spent a good portion of time in my own writing talking about Indian culture and it's relation to my family. I've been hearing praise for Alexie's writing since I worked in the bookstore. This collection of stories did not disappoint! Not only is the writing beautiful, but Alexie gives voice to several generations and their fight for survival. Haunting and hopeful, Alexie's stories are ones that wont' be forgotten. I'll definitely be reading more of his work.

Book 7: Then we Came to the End by Joshua Ferris

I bought this book at one of Ferris' readings. He signed my book "Ferris, like the wheel." after I told him my name was "London, like the city." It's no surprise why this young emerging author is collecting awards. His writing is witty and emotive. I thought that mostly his book about working at an ad agency would be like watching "the office" and in moments it is. there are some of the same sorts of awkward humor and riffs between co-workers. Ferris writes in depth profiles of each character that strikes a chord and makes them family. In moments it seems you are right there at the water cooler gossiping about the office and in another you are taken through moments of great loss and human experience. You'll want to read it more than once...and maybe even recommend it to all your friends. I just did ;)

Book 8: The art of Losing by Rebecca Connell

I picked up this book last week mostly because the cover was kind of awesome. I do that. So far it's served me well. I read the description and the first few pages and knew I wanted to read more. The writing is average but the story is very intriguing in a soap opera/grey anatomy drama kind of way. I read it in one sitting. Following the affair and death of the main character's mother over 20 years ago from two opposing story lines is what makes this book unique and worth reading. Sometimes everything is not as it seems...be prepared for a few unexpected and disturbing twists.

Rockabilly Inspired Invitations

The last few weeks have been sort of crazy. Car troubles, new job, tons of orders to fill and mail (Thanks so much!!!) and all that life stuff.

Some of you may have already noticed that I listed Printable Wedding invites in the new shop as "coming soon." I hope to have some invitation suites in there at the beginning of May. I will also have some other fun wedding related things!

I wanted to share these custom Rockabilly inspired invites that I just finished for Katie and Geoff.

We created two invitations, one green and one black. Here's the black suite

I love how they turned out! We'll be doing some other day of stationary so I'll share that later!

Designer Wednesday: Jaszmurka

Last month I asked Jaszmurka to be a guest designer for the April launch. I've admired her effortless creativity for a long time now after first stumbling upon her flickr stream. She makes messy look so gosh darn easy and I knew her style would work well with the You Rock line. I can tell you she didn't disappoint. Here are a few of her projects!

The first project Jaszmurka came up with are these super cute button magnets! How have I not been doing this all along? I'm definitely going to make some of my own for the fridge!

She selected three non hole buttons for quick magnets. Supplies used: pen, glue, scissors and a small magnet sheet.
Trace a circle onto your magnet sheet, cut and glue to the back of each button.

Use to hold notes, photos or whatever else! So easy and adorable!

And of course these fabulous messy layouts.

So lovely! The spraypaint makes me die a little! Of course what don't I love spraypaint on...?

Today's reveal is probably my favorite! Those of you who regularly read my blog know I'm a LITTLE bit obsessed with cassette tapes. Ok, a lot. I wanted to create a collection that was really vivid, almost fluorescent, with cassettes and boom-boxes. I think you'll love it too!

The last month has been a challenge to say the least! Besides losing my glasses and dipping my beloved Iphone into the ocean (and ruining it) I had an awesome time in Mexico and will share pictures sooo soon! Here' a quick snapshot of the view from our room!

This week is full of website work. The new shop will Launch on Friday! Are you ready? So many long hours spent at the computer the last couple months editing new designs and editing photos. Now the real work is almost done.

Gmail Fail...

Hey everyone, my Gmail account has been acting like a spoiled brat. It keeps crashing and I haven't been able to pull picture attachments for a few days. Thus, Designer wednesday is delayed until Gmail finishes a long overdue "time out."

Today is National Read Across America day! And Dr. Suess day! So pick up a book and delight in the oldest form of entertainment and enlightenment! I'll be posting a big project 52 update soon! Here's a quick funny read I just finished:

most bookstores have it for less than $10. It's a book that can be read in an hour and includes some of my favorite comedians like Zach Galifianakis and Jim Gaffigan. Enjoy!

Guest Designer: Mara May

It's no secret that I haven't scrapbooked much these last two years. But I still get goosebumps each time I see my buttons on someone else's project! Today I am thrilled to share some projects from Mara May! She was one of my first scrapbook crushes, so it's an honor!

Love how she used the Simply Sweet buttons as little balloons! And such pretty layers.

Sewing, ink, houndstooth and aqua? DREAMY! Used Merry Mustaches and graffiti love buttons.

Love all the layers and details here! That paper is gorgeous.

I think these banners are so awesome! Perfect for a baby shower or a welcoming gift! (Wishing I had one for my friend's new little baby!) The tag shapes and pretty ribbon really get me! Used both the pink and blue Oh, Baby buttons. Mara did an amazing job creating these projects and I hope she inspired you! Be sure to check out her shop too, it's always full of pretty things!

I'm taking a break from regular features this week, my design team hasn't had much time to play with all the goodies I sent last month so I want to post when I have a few more layouts to share!

I'm a huge fan of Elise's blog. I tend to drool a little over her modern living projects...so when I saw her quilt I knew this was the answer to the problem I've been having with picking out bedding.

I know what you're thinking...dear god are you a crazy woman? You want to make your own quilt? And the answer is Yes, and Yes. I love the graphic designs and bold colors on Elise's quilt but I love the idea of being able to choose the exact colors and patterns of my own. I know, I have a hard time finishing big projects like this...but I think I can do it ;) I've been itching for a new sewing project anyway! Also, for the record, I'm jealous of the amount of natural light her home has, seriously! I would kill for that.

These last couple weeks I've felt like I have so much I want to blog and share but I can't! It's killing me! I can't wait to share what I'm working on.

Book 4

Last week I read Steve Almond's "This won't take but a minute honey" at Michal's insistence. It's a short one, less than 100 pages. Technically it's two books, one side is full of short stories and the other is more insights on the craft of writing.

Imagine Sedaris writing a book about, well writing! I tend to feel highly enamored when reading books about how to craft a story. To me stories are just are just as magical an art form as painting is. And as usual when I love some art form I feel the need to investigate the person behind it. I love that this book is self published. That it's "handmade" if you will. I like that there is no fuss about sales, only content and sharing.

I hate to add another bk to your must read list everyone but I must. It'll take you 30 minutes to read this, and it doesn't disappoint!

There were no projects to share this week for designer Wednesday. Hey, we all get a break sometime eh?

On a separate note, in 6 weeks I'm going to Mexico with my mom. I can't wait! I'm so ready for sun...and some quality time with my mama :) I suppose this means I better reacquaint myself with the gym. I'm even thinking about signing up for some fitness classes, like zumba or hot yoga! Have any of you tried these? What helps you stay motivated to work out?

It's been a crazy busy week so far, but I'm ready to share some inspiration and Project 52 updates with you tomorrow. (Yes, I'm still caught up! And going strong!)

Keep calm and eat cake

Last summer I bought a book at UO called Booze Cakes. Oh yes, it's just as amazing as it sounds. I've slowly been trying out recipes on special occasions. Last week I made the pineapple upside down cakes and they were delicious!! So now, I'm sharing the recipe with you:

Pineapple Lemon Cupcakes
3⁄4 cup (1-1⁄2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1⁄4 cup dark rum
3⁄4 cup pineapple juice
3 cups all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons rum
3 tablespoons blue Curacao
5 drops blue food coloring

Rum Pineapple Topping
3⁄4 cup (1-1⁄2 sticks) unsalted butter
1-2⁄3 cups light brown sugar
1 tablespoon dark rum
12 pineapple slices

Additional Topping:
Whipped cream (make it spiked by folding in two tablespoons of rum)
coconut shavings
12 maraschino cherries

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two cupcake pans.
2. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla and rum. Mix in pineapple juice. Add flour, baking powder and salt. Transfer one-third of the batter into a separate bowl and stir in blue Curacao, and food coloring.
3. For the topping: In a saucepan over medium heat, stir butter and brown sugar 3 minutes, or until melted. Remove from heat and stir in rum. Reserve one-third of the mixture; spoon the rest into pans. Put a cherry into the center of each cup and arrange pineapple wedges around each cherry. (or if you like the cherry cold like me you can add it after it has been cooked)
4. Spoon the yellow batter into pans, and then the blue batter. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.
5. Let cakes cool a few minutes, and then loosen with a knife. Press a serving tray to the pan; flip over to unmold cakes. Add the whipped cream and coconut and cherry on top.

Type of Cake: Individual Cakes
Serves: 10–12

I AM SO EXCITED TO WRITE THIS POST!!

Ok, sorry for all the yelling, but I've been holding this in for a long time! Today I'm starting our Guest Designer series. Once a month I will ask someone to be a Guest Design Team member. January's Guest designer is the incredibly talented (not to mention sweet and ultra thrift-tastic) Christina Clouse!

I've been a blog stalker of Christina's for the past several years. When I was still working at Lasting Memories she walked in one Saturday and I had a small freak out. I wanted to be like "uh, hello!?! Don't you know who that is? Why isn't anyone else freaking out?" Thank goodness she didn't think I was a stage 5 creeper when she got to the counter and I said something awkward like "um, I totally know who you are. I read your blog..." I was much less crazy when I saw her after that, and no doubt she's one of the sweetest people I have ever met.

Christina's projects blew me away! Her style is full of layers, vintage elements, lots of distressing and tons of texture! I could go on, but I think her talent speaks for itself! Enjoy!

Guest Designer Teaser and other giggly things

Yesterday Michal asked if I would write her a letter of recommendation. Of course I obliged. But I couldn't resist in writing a funny one too...here is the "fake" letter:

I wanted to say a quick "hello" to all the Freckled Nest readers! Thanks a ton for your support and readership! I've had fun looking at the comments and slowly going to everyone's blog! I didn't realize that Project 52 would be such a hit, but I wanted to have a non crafty feature and it has been a personal goal to read more! If you join the project please share what you read! I'd love love love to hear it!!

As for the questions I've received...

1. there are still a few links that don't click through (DIY, Tutorials, featured designers...) I am in the process of tagging old posts so that I can create a place for these links to connect to! The featured designers is a new thing...and starts tomorrow!! Thank you in advance for your patience and I hope you will enjoy the content when it is all live. I did update the wedding link, and will continue when I have more photos edited!

2. In response to my post from yesterday, I was the Manager of the Waldenbooks store for three years until it closed. It was a challenging store, but by the last year I had an amazing staff (of only five people!!) and we had a total blast. If you work for Borders, hang in there. I know it's a company in crisis right now.

I plan on doing a 100 things about me segment soon, and we can all get to know eachother better ;)

Monday Mix

Today is the 2 year anniversary of when the bookstore M and I used to work at closed. Clearing out the clutter

On monday I mentioned I was going through my supplies and trying to downsize a little. That project cleared out about 75% of my stash. In preparation of some amazing new products I'm bringing to the shop soon I need both the room and the extra change to make it all work. I also realized that some of this stuff I've had for quite a while and haven't even attempted to use it. To me that means I probably won't use it anytime soon...and I'd rather pass it on to someone who might!!I'm having a huge destash sale in my OLD ETSY SHOP so be sure to check it out and tell your friends. The shipping for the papers is high, but anything above 8X8 is hard to mail because I have to find an envelope or box big enough and pad it correctly as not to damage the goods. I am happy to A). Combine shipping to save on your costs and B). refund you the difference if shipping is less than listed!
Please please please help me get this stuff cleared out! I can't wait to share the new products with you in the upcoming months!

Project 52 update

Project 52 is so far successful! At first I worried I might lose interest or momentum, but honestly I've had a harder time not reading ahead. I've devoured everything I've read so far and had to start pacing myself so I still get my other things done :)

Book 2

Skeletons at the feast-Chris Bohjalian

I bought this book two years ago, it's been sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to get around to it! I love WWII stories, and this novel is based loosely on real people's stories/diaries during that time. Bohjalian's writing is smooth and even though he writes from the perspective of several different characters (and different sides, german, jewish, scottish...) throughout the story you never feel lost or disjointed. My favorite thing about the book is the way these characters intertwine in the stories, it gives a sense of what it really might have been like. His portrayal of the war is abrupt and violent, heartbreaking and honest. I strongly recommend it!

Book 3

Three Dog Life-Abigail Thomas

I'm not even sure where to start. This book was a sucker punch to the heart. This memoir is about Thomas' husband who gets hit by a car in NYC and suffers a life changing brain injury. The injury alters his personality, his memory and his ability to complete simple tasks such as brushing his teeth. Thomas puts her husband in an assisted living home, but her love and loyalty never stray.

I was recommended this book by a writing professor in college, due to Thomas' writing style. Her prose is honest, insightful and heartbreaking without feeling forced. There's nothing I hate more than a book that reads like a lifetime movie, and generally this type of tragedy tends to lead to that type of storytelling. Not Thomas. Her writing is so incredible I had to keep myself from reading the book in one sitting. My favorite chapter is "How to break up a dog fight" which relates just as much to the human condition as it does to her three dogs.

Project 52 update: book 1

I'm taking a little break. My wisdom teeth are killing me right now, and mostly I've only felt like sitting in my warm bed with a book! Speaking of books, how about a quick update on Project 52?

Book 1: On the Road-Jack Kerouac
I've been wanting to read this book for a long time! I am often just as interested in a book as I am the author. Especially an autobiographical novel such as this one...it makes me want to know more about how it was written and the who the author was. I get lost in all the details of putting it together. I knew quite a bit about Kerouac and how he wrote this book before I even read the first page. I already had favorite quotes. I related to the longing and restlessness of this story and highly recommend it!

I'm so excited about 2011 already. December was a rough month, and I'm hoping January will prove much better. There are some really really exciting things in the works for this year! I have only shared them with a few people because I love love love surprises :) I hope you will be excited with me!

Today's DT feature is Sharmaine. I love how consistent she with blogging and scrapping, and I don't know how she does it! She's mum to four beauties and still manages to keep up her creativity! Amazing!

Project 52

I'm taking a break from posting photos to tell you about my psuedo New Years resolution. I don't like making resolutions, instead I usually make a list each year on my birthday of things I'd like to accomplish in the next year. (I still haven't shared my list for this year, maybe I should do that?!)

Yesterday Michal and I spent some time in Borders (We used to work for Waldenbooks) and I realized how much I've missed reading. Lately I've done better but I'm still only reading one or two books a month at best. For shame!

So, as of yesterday I began Project 52. Please feel free to join in! (And share!!!!)

The goal: read 52 books in one year.

Rules:

1. You may read at your own pace, but I recommend one book per week.
2. No re-reads. If you began a book but didn't finish that is ok.
3. No magazines, ebooks, audio books, textbooks, etc.
4. Acceptable forms: All fiction, non-fiction, and collections of essays, short stories or poetry. Graphic novels count as long as there are lots of other types of books being read too!

I will post about each book after I've read it and you'll be able to read archives. I hope you will join in!

Wedding Ceremony

Our venue was on the small side but ended up being just about perfect for 85 people. It felt so incredibly intimate, like a family gathering!

My poor mama cried pretty much the entire time.

The top photo of my grandparents just cracks me up. My grandma is a notorious family paparazzi and it was just the perfect picture of her. (I think maybe my grandpa is scolding her a little for standing in the aisle to take pictures...ha ha)

My adorable little nephew just cried when it was his turn to walk down the aisle, but he was quickly quieted with a cupcake from our coordinator Grace (green dress). Like I said, everyone became family. We wrote our own ceremony and included a declaration of support for/from our guests. For this part of the ceremony we passed our rings around so that each guest could bestow their wishes and blessings and support on our marriage before we exchanged our rings. We also wrote our own vows, and it felt so much more natural to exchange our promises to each other in our own words.

And...Married! I have tons of photos from the after party and our smilebooth still to share. Happy New Year! May yours be as magical as the last one was for me!

Big day pt. 3

I loved the flowers we ended up with. Instead of a florist we wanted to support local growers and make our own boquets. We went to Pike's Place Market the day before the wedding and spent less than $250 on ALL our flowers for the venue, boquets, etc. We were at the mercy of what was in season, but I had been watching for several weeks and knew we'd be able to snag some gorgeous dahlias. We wrapped the bottom with bakers twine and I made some button stems with stripes and stars.

I had 8 bridesmaids. It's a lot of people to coordinate with and perhaps 4 would have been plenty, but nonetheless...I'm glad I got to share the day with these beauties! They kept me sane and helped with all the last minute things that I couldn't have done alone! You might be noticing there are only 7 girls in the pictures...My dear friend Leah was unable to make it at the last minute due to illness. We accepted this possibility when I asked her to be a bridesmaid, as she battles a debilitating chronic illness. It was emotional not to have her there, she has been with me through all the big moments since high school. On my wedding day I called her just a few minutes before I walked down the aisle and then I had a friend put her on speakerphone throughout the entire ceremony. It was the next best thing to having her there in person.

For our centerpieces we used a combination of mason jars, white Ikea vases and old apothecary/medicine bottles from my father in law's collection. I wish we had taken more photos because there were some gorgeous aqua and green ones! We had 100s to choose from! It was so fun to include something borrowed in our decor. All the jars and vases were put together by the bridesmaids, moms and grandmas! We had way more flowers than we needed!

The bottom table runner was a natural linen I ordered online and sewed. The top runner is...kraft paper! For reals! You know those big rolls of brown kraft paper you can get in the mailing section? Yep, that's all it is. For about 15$ I made 13 runners. I used acrylic paint, spraypaint, stencils and oil pastels. Michal helped me iron the edges over and then I sewed around the edge. It gave the tables a pop of color! There are so many possibilities you could do with this, paint stripes...etc.

The photo wire was just bakers twine and spraypainted clothespins. It was so much fun to look at photos from when we were little or from the time we first started dating. I loved that everyone got to know us a little better through the photos.

I still LOVE that canopy. Can't help myself. It was a last minute idea that I wasn't sure would even work out. Boy did it ever work out...it was one of my favorite things! It's now hanging in our apartment! It was inspired by Max and Margeaux's wedding on once wed, but their fabric installation was part of a lattice structure. The challenge in creating ours was figuring out how to attach and suspend it from something.

Big day pt. 2

The earlier part of my wedding day was the most stressful morning/afternoon I can remember. Between setting up all the decorations and having a super tight schedule that would have been plenty. Of course there were even worse moments. (The hair dresser was a fiasco and I cried in the middle of the salon. I was mortified. I only cry when I'm angry and I was sooo angry. The hairdresser pretty much refused to listen to what I wanted him to do.) My mistake, lesson learned. Do your own hair! I was an HOUR late to pictures because I was trying to fix my hair and put my makeup and dress on. By the time I stuffed myself (in my dress!) into my car and drove some of the bridesmaids to the park I was ready to get to the good part of the day.

I was so focused on the moment of our "first look" that I didn't even notice this guy climbing the side of tower! Imagine my surprise when I got the photos back!

The first time the boy saw me in my dress was perfect. Even though both our families and the entire wedding party was there too it was a secluded moment and it gave me enough time to relax and focus on just getting married!

This last photo is probably my favorite out of all of them!

My dress was a Maggie Sottero. My dad came with me when I picked it out in February, and it was the second one I tried on. We both had that reaction when I put it on, and although I altered it a little I was happy with the simple style of dress I picked. It fit comfortably and the striped fabric I added in place of the bow and studded brooch made it feel much more "me."

I definitely recommend taking photos before the ceremony, so that after you can just enjoy the guests, eachother and the whole experience.

Long distance Christmas

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! We spent the day with good friends, and ended it with picking up the intern from the airport! So happy to have her back!

Since my family all lives far away, I've gotten used to celebrating Christmas through the phone. Yesterday when I was talking to my brother my niece was trying to "show" me what santa brought her over the phone...so we hopped on Skype instead. Those two mini faces bliss me out. It makes me homesick! There is just something so magical about christmas when you are a little kid. Here are a few cute snapshots of my brother's adorable fam during our skype session!

Holiday Tag tutorial

Tomorrow I'm participating in a tag exchange. I wanted to use supplies I already had and also try a new technique. I purchased some thin sheets of wood from Impress at the Uvillage and then used exisiting stamps, paint, buttons and washi masking tape.

I rounded the edges of the wood with my corner chomper, and then used two pieces of masking tape.
I used an old Martha Stewart stamp with a vintage-ish script and my black embossing pad. (I tried staz-on but it created a more faded look.)

I used a mirrored gold spraypaint over the tag. The paint will soak into the wood so mostly I just sprayed it on the tape. I used another piece of masking tape to keep the stamped part protected. (This step would be easier if done BEFORE stamping...but I'm not always thinking ahead)You can use a heat gun to speed up the dry time of the spray paint. Then use a Crop-o-dile to punch holes in the top of the tag.

I used simple silver sequins and placed them by dropping several onto the tag at random and then gluing them. I then added some "merry mustache" buttons and red bakers twine...and voila! Done! So cute and easy. I think they turned out sort of fun and retro! It's going to be tough to give them away!

**Note: the buttons used for these tags are part of my new "mustache" set that will be available SOON in the shop. The set includes all the buttons shown as well as some others! Lots of stripes, plaid, houndstooth and many merry mustaches!

It's been quite a while since I shared my mixed tape obsession. I'm sort of an analog girl at heart, I like cassette tapes, I like old books, I like old grainy film cameras...I'm not resistant to change, but I feel like a certain amount of joy and effort is lost in new technology. I spend hours in my room growing up waiting for the songs I wanted to play on the radio so I could record them onto my cassette. Seriously. I have since upgraded my music sharing methods, but the effort and idea is still the same. I make "mixed cds" for my dad, my mom, my brother, my friends...I take careful consideration to naming the disc something awesome and wrapping it up like the sweetest present you'll ever receive. I even use snail mail. Whoa! So, while I can't lovingly mail you a mixed tape every Monday (although I'd love to if you really want. I also gladly accept yours) I can share some of my current mood music and favorite conceptual photos!

Does anyone recognize this adorable face? It's the lovely intern! I was asked to contribute some art to a charity benefit (happening today) and this is the piece I chose. You may recognize the bottom corner from one of the new rings in the shop! I experimented with photo transfers for the first time and it was much easier than I thought! I painted most of the background with my fingers while the paint was still wet to blend it. I have been really loving this color combo, and I'm sure you'll see more like this in the future!

Something Different

After more than a year with a blah blog you might be rubbing your eyes in shock! I'm still finishing up editing the pages and most of the links are not yet live so be patient with me! I decided on Monday (yes really) that I needed to do something with the blog... and quickly put together a concept. Sometimes this is how my brain works, I wake up with the idea that I'm going to do something and I just do it! I think I may have triggered some pre-wedding frantic flashbacks for the boy and the intern this week while I worked non stop (and the boy helped) on making this place pretty, but they both seem to agree it was worth it! This was my first major blog makeover! I hope you like it! I feel so inspired to blog <3

The images under "Features" on the left represent new regular features that I will blogging about. I will be sharing my mixed tape playlists and favorite cassette photos (believe me, I have many!), listography (like my 25 things before 26 list) and of course my featured designers. On the right I will be linking popular topics and posts for easy reference. Wedding photos are going to be in any day. ANY DAY! I can't wait to see them! I will let you know when they are here, and once they are ready I will post them under the wedding link on a separate page! I will also be posting gallery pages for each member of the design team so that you can get an inspiration high whenever you need it! Are you excited? I am!

Stacey has a spray ink collection I am quite envious of! I love all the layers and masking in her work! This first piece is a canvas she created using the All star and Blue/Green button sets. Love!

A Mini Book and Sale Update!!

I haven't really been scrapbooking lately. Ever since my favorite store closed (Lasting Memories) it's not only difficult to find the cute things I want but I also just don't have the time! I did put together some books of our engagement photos for our Moms and gave them to each after the wedding. I thought I'd share a few pics of my Mom's bk I snapped while I was visiting her.

I kept it pretty simple...since we were in the midst of a move and I didn't want to unpack everything. SEI papers, Vintage lace/pretty in pink buttons, masking tape and a little paint!

The weather outside is frightful...

I might be a little addicted to my hipstamatic app on my iphone...but hey...it's fun! The boy snapped these pics of the intern and I after dinner last night at a cute little italian restaurant! We couldn't resist the lit walkway...too cute! It's quite chilly for Seattle weather around here, and today it has been snowing! agh! This weekend was full of sewing, singing and crafty magic. Some of which we can't share yet!

I spotted these cute pairs of flats at Target, while in search of rain boots (which I also bought) and I couldn't resist. Since the lovely intern and I have the same wee sized feet....we can share the cuteness! So far we're sharing the pretties quite nicely.

I created another Christmas set of buttons. I wanted something bright and non traditional in color scheme! Hope you love them! They will be in the shop today!

And some more new goodies...rings! It's been almost a year since I put new rings in the shop and I'm excited to create more! I gave all my bridesmaids a pretty ring, as well as my mom, while they were all here in September. My mom informed me the other day that she feels much more "put together" when she wears it. Aw, isn't that the sweetest thing ever? The "love" one is my favorite!

It's snowing here today so i'm hanging out indoors and updating the etsy shop! Hope you are having a lovely Monday!

For the Uninspired

Last week was a rough one. By that I mean, it felt impossible to stay focused and inspired. It felt impossible to have pennies in our bank account and have to eat, buy gas, pay bills...and find fun things to do with virtually no money. I know this is something everyone is going through, or at least experienced at some point, but it's so easy to let the negativity chip away at the dream.

Posts like this one from Elsie help. They remind me that chasing the artistic dream is never easy, and likely a long series of steps I tend to try and skip. I'm sometimes too eager to jump to the end, when really I have a lot to learn. I'm still learning and growing in the world of creating, I'm still finding my niche, I'm still figuring out how to dream something and then be able to make it come to life.

So, even though it was a quiet week for me on the blog front, I was sort of regrouping. I spent most of the week painting, taking an online class, cooking up new product ideas, thinking of handmade Christmas gifts for each person on my list that aren't lame...and that can incorporate existing supplies, and mainly...getting myself inspired again.

In case there was any doubt...here's a picture of my desk I snapped with my iphone last week.

I visited a lot of inspiring retail places including B&N, Pacific Gallery of Antiques, Anthropologie, and the Freemont Farmers market. Seeing displays is really inspiring to me, especially during the holidays.

As of this morning I'm back to chronic list making and ready to make some pretty things. I'm still seeking inspiration, but I'm pushing through the urge to sit in my jim-jams all day...or worse, to break down and find a real job that will give me something to be miserable about. In case you need a little reminder of the bigger picture...here's one.

The Nuptuals Pt 1

We are still waiting for the pro photos to come back...soon! Very very soon! Our awesome photographer did a second shoot today with us, in the same location. Unfortunately my day of hair appointment was an utter fiasco, and I hate hate hated how my hair looked on my wedding day. So, today I styled my own hair, and we recreated the magic. I can't wait to share all the photos with you! For now, here are some of the shots captured by friends and family!

My adorable little brother played an acoustic version of Green Day's "Time of your life" for our first dance. It's one of the boy's favorites...and it was a well conspired surprise!

That's all for now. Most of the photos turned out blurry so we haven't had much to look at. We are chomping at the bit to see the rest. When we get them back I'll be able to go into more detail about the handmade elements of our special day!

Gleeful greetings from your favorite intern! I'm pleased to exercise my blogging privileges in honor of a holiday near and dear to my heart, National Boss Day. It's a holiday I've celebrated for the past few years, one that always inspires a little nostalgia. The truth is I've known London as boss longer than friend, artist, roommate, or queen of the buttons. She was my boss in a tiny bookstore, in a tiny town, in a tiny moment. I spent those first book-filled days thinking this new boss of mine was intense, kind of scary, and probably mean. How wrong first impressions can be. I wouldn't trade her now for anyone.

Lady London, you're my forever boss lady. You've made an impression on me. As your craft and paint endeavors continue to grow and thrive, you deserve every success and more.

The life and times...

One of my goals this year is to photograph my daily life. Part of this process is learning how to take better photos and using more photoshop actions to edit them.

Today the intern and I had a date in downtown seattle. We visited the library, one of my favorite buildings! The architecture and colors are totally wild! My favorite spots are obviously the elevator and escalator...because they sort of scream at you!

I'll try to scan in the polaroids we took tomorrow! Most adorable ever!

Also, I've been quiet lately...I know. Sometimes I pull back, take pause, and try to collect myself a little. These past few weeks have been that way for me. I tend to share more of the arts and crafts side of my life but less of the rest. I'm working on it...Really...I swear.

Let me introduce you to the new loves of my life.... the Diana Dreamer and a pretty pink Holga! I opted for the 35mm holga to start with. I've never used one!! I shot a roll of film today and hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to see how it turned out! Today I mailed a LOT of pretty packages, said goodbye to two of my favorite paintings that sold, and played in all the leaves behind where I live!

I've been playing around with some photoshop actions today as well...wow, how have I not known about these? Awesome!! More new photos to follow :)

Hello Fall!

It's no secret that Fall is my FAVORITE season, and I spend most of summer excited for scarves, hot beverages, and amazing landscape changes. Now I can't believe that September is over! It's been a really amazing month. I got married, I got to spend time with people who mean the world to me (that I rarely get to see) and although you haven't seen much progress...I've been very inspired. Fall sort of stirs something in me, and I'm about to start projects that I've been dreaming of for more than a year. It's going to be amazing!

To celebrate Fall's arrival, the intern and I planned a lovely celebration for the entire day last Sunday!

We wore our favorite scarves and sweaters

We had Pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks

We tried the new Autumn Spice donut from Frost

We bought Fall scented candles: (Pumpkin, Cinnamon and mulled cider)

We made hot apple cider with oranges, cloves and cinnamon sticks.

We ate chicken noodle soup and spice cake for dessert....

And we ended the day with lovely music in downtown Seattle.

This week I've been catching up on life, housework (well, kind of. sort of...ok, not really) and new designs for the shop! I have a LOT of new stuff going up on etsy this Friday!!! October is going to be full of new fun things and a lovely sale...so stay tuned!

Hey! So, today I am officially back to reality. All the wedding crazy has mellowed and I am happily planning fall outings, etsy updates, new products and the like.

I wanted to share a couple of the photos we've recieved from friends. It's going to be a couple months before we have real professional photos to share so bear with me! I'll probably be able to do a couple full posts by the end of the week, starting chronologically with the wedding set up...because as you know...DIY weddings are always a labor of love!

But to give you a little teaser, here are a couple shots taken right after Christian saw me for the first time in my dress. It was a well kept secret. Oh, and the shoes...Yeah, I rocked those the entire time. My parents tried to talk me out of it...but I love them.

This next photo is from my iphone so excuse the blur. I snapped this a couple hours into the reception...we were all out on the dance floor and I looked over and saw this. It was sort of breathtaking...and completely magical. Seeing my ideas, and hard work come together and having it turn out better than I could have hoped...awesome. This is where we stood for the ceremony. there are string lights above and those candles burned all night. The lighting was amazing.

We Did It!

Of course a formal post with lots more details will follow. But Just so you know, Saturday was pure MAGIC people!!! Can't wait to share more with you. The beauty, the drama, the hilarity...all of it :) We had a blast. We shared a perfect (well, almost...you know how these things go!) day with some of our most favorite people in the entire world. And we even teleconferenced one sick bridesmaid in too. EPIC.

I don't know how it got to be friday already... but it's been a long week. Last night I took a sewing break and fell asleep. I woke up at 4 this morning with my jeans on, my make up on and my mane of hair twisted in some god awful knot. So it goes.

I thought you might enjoy this little "now and then" comparison. This photo is one of many gems. My Grandma made my outfit! Who knew I was so fashionable? And already into scarves at age 4...

and here i am looking much less tragic today!! I never wear dresses but i love this one :)
